We work closely with recognized industry associations to ensure our business operations adhere to recognized industry standards.  Additionally, we have full time EHS Managers at our facilities, overseeing internationally recognized corporate safety programs in place at all locations.

Responsible Recycling Practices for Electronics Recyclers (R2:2008) certification is a stringent set of requirements for electronics recyclers. This new standard is supported by major electronic OEM's, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), public interest groups, the US EPA, and US state and local governments. The standard includes requirements for environmental, worker health and safety, and security practices.

Sims Recycling Solutions plants operate to R2:2008 standards. We are in the process of having all plants in North America R2:2008 certified.

For 3 years in a row, Sims Metal Management has been named to the Global 100, a list of the 100 most environmentally sustainable companies, as determined each year at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland

Reduced Environmental Footprint

In October 2010, Sims Metal Management was recognized as a top performer by the Investor Group on Climate Change for Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI). The CDLI is an important global survey that ranks the transparency of companies as they report and manage carbon emissions.  It reflects best practices in terms of corporate governance in measuring greenhouse gas emissions. This index is representative of Sims' strategic commitment to measuring and managing our corporate carbon footprint.

All Sims Recycling Solutions plants operate to ISO 14001:2004 standards.

ISO 14001:2004 is a standard for environmental management systems with the aim of reducing the environmental footprint of a business and to decreasing the pollution and waste a business produces. It exists to help organizations minimize how their operations negatively affect the environment.

SimMMway Safety Management System

Sims' award winning safety program is visible to all who enter the plant, with extensive use of safety vests, safety glasses, steel toed shoes, face shields, and clearly defined safe walkways. Sims takes responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of employees, contractors and visitors and works to foster a positive and balanced working environment.

To meet the specific challenges of recycling electronics, Sims Recycling Solutions operates processing lines with enclosed conveyors and processing rooms with extensive uptakes to capture and contain hazardous particulates.  Each shredding system has an independent dust collection system equipped with HEPA filters designed to maintain a safe and healthy workplace for the protection of our employees and our environment.

OHSAS 18000:2007 is an international occupational health and safety management system specification. Sims Recycling Solutions and our parent company Sims Metal Management are dedicated to providing safe workspaces for all of our employees, contractors, visitors, and surrounding communities.  We have taken our highly regarded safety program to new levels with SimsMMway Safety, developed to integrate recognized elements of positive safety management into our work culture.

Sims commitment to ISO 9001 compliance assures customers that we have defined quality processes in place. ISO 9001 is an international quality management standard for defined processes, supported by detailed and adequate records, checking output for defects, with appropriate and corrective action where necessary. Sims regularly reviews individual processes and our quality system itself for effectiveness, thereby ensuring an environment that operates with a philosophy of continual improvement.

Pollution Liability Insurance

Computers and electronics can contain high levels of hazardous materials, such as lead, mercury, chromium, nickel and zinc. Environmentally responsible recycling of these materials is important. Sims' pollution liability insurance limit is above the industry average and reflects our high business and environmental standards.

Cyber Security Insurance

Improper and careless handling of hard drives containing private and sensitive information can be a devastating liability to companies operating in today's electronic age. Sims Recycling Solutions' cyber security insurance covers legal liability arising from the theft and fraudulent use of personally identifiable information.
