Sims Recycling Solutions Joins the Coalition for American Electronics Recycling

20/Dec/2011

December 20, 2011 - Sims Recycling Solutions, the global leader in electronics reuse and recycling, announced today that they have joined the Coalition for American Electronics Recycling (CAER). CAER supports passage of federal legislation to restrict the export of toxic electronic waste (e-waste) from the United States and promote expansion of the domestic recycling industry.

"Without strong environmental, health and safety standards, recycling electronic waste can become a risk to not only the environment but also to the employees working under those conditions," stated Steve Skurnac, President, Sims Recycling Solutions, Americas. "We are proud to stand behind CAER and support their efforts to prevent toxic e-waste from entering landfills overseas."

Introduced in June, the Responsible Electronics Recycling Act (HR 2284/SB1270) would restrict toxic e-waste exports to developing countries that lack adequate safeguards for the environment and workers. There is growing bi-partisan support for the bill as additional co-sponsors have added their names to the bill in recent weeks. To support Representative Gene Green (D-TX),  the lead House sponsor of the bill, 11 co-sponsors now include: Michael Thompson (D-CA), Steve LaTourette (R-OH), Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Blake Farenthold (R-TX), Charlie Gonzalez (D-TX), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Dennis Ross (R-FL), Lee Terry, (R-NE), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Grace Napolitano (D-CA), and Jeff Denham (R-CA).  In the Senate, similar legislation is co-sponsored by U.S. Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).

CAER now includes 35 U.S. companies involved in all aspects of the domestic electronics recycling and disposition industry with operations in 36 states as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Along with these recycling companies, leading electronics manufacturers and retailers, including LG Electronics, Hewlett Packard, Dell, Apple, Samsung and Best Buy have joined CAER as alliance members. (Complete membership list below, or visit the CAER website).

The Coalition is continuing to work with both the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, which have jurisdiction over the bills, as well as other Congressional offices that would benefit from the jobs created by this legislation. For more information about HR 2284/SB1270, visit the CAER website, which includes links to the full text of each bill.
